22 Benefits of Jogging

Courtesy : Healthsomeness.com

Jogging is a fairly gentle sport that allows you to get all the benefits of exercise without putting your body under huge amounts of strain. There are many benefits of jogging that go far beyond the obvious associations we make with it.

In fact, a surprising amount of these benefits are unknown to the majority of us, and even those that do jog may only feel some of them. However, this does not mean that the first associations we make with jogging are any less beneficial, so they are a good place to start in this list.

1. Respiratory System

Jogging is an aerobic activity, which means that the use of oxygen features heavily. This is the opposite of sprinting which is anaerobic, as no oxygen is involved; sprinters generally hold their breath for the duration of the sprint. In aerobic activities each cell in the body requires oxygen and produces carbon dioxide as a waste product.

The respiratory system is responsible for the intake of essential oxygen and the release of waste carbon dioxide. Of course, this is an ongoing process every time you breathe, but jogging helps make it a much more efficient one. The tidal volume, or the lungs’ capacity, increases overall, and as this increases the amount of oxygen your muscles need decreases due to their improved efficiency.

The lungs also grow more alveoli, which is where gas exchanges are made between the blood and the lungs, so that the extra intake of oxygen can be used effectively. The overall increase in your body’s intake and efficiency with oxygen has huge benefits that we will see later.

2. Cardiovascular System

The cardiovascular system is responsible for transporting blood around the body and consists of the heart, veins, arteries, and capillaries. It is through the blood that oxygen and carbon dioxide as well as other nutrients are transported between the lungs and every cell in the body.

The burning of cholesterol reduces blood pressure which subsequently lowers the risk of heart disease and strokes. Just like the lungs grow extra alveoli, capillary density will increase around the body to ensure that the oxygen is getting to new muscle and to already existing parts of the body.

Capillaries are where exchanges are made between the blood and cells, resulting in each cell receiving the oxygen and other essentials in greater quantities and speed, as well as more easily passing off waste. Each cell is therefore functioning to a much greater degree of efficiency.

3. Heart

The heart benefits hugely from jogging. It is arguably one of the most important organs in the body and is responsible for pumping blood. The improvements to the cardiovascular system have knock on effects for the heart. The heart is a muscular organ, so the more it works, the stronger it becomes.

Clearly a strong heart reduces the risk of heart disease in later life. Regular exercise, such as jogging helps to strengthen it.

4. Muscles

New muscle will grow and existing muscle will become stronger and more efficient. The muscle that gains the most benefit aside from the heart is the diaphragm. The diaphragm is the muscle which controls your breathing and separates your lungs and heart from the abdominal cavity.

Every time it contracts, your lungs draw in air. This is going to happen a huge amount of times during a jog, which means that it gets much stronger, and can help your lungs fill with more air as well as cope with any further strenuous activity.

The legs are clearly worked a lot also, and jogging does more than what simply walking does (stretching the muscles). Because jogging is a gentle sport, your legs will complete a large number of low weight extensions. This strengthens them without getting them to grow massive.

5. Brain

The organs of the body benefit enormously from the increase in oxygen, and although all are important, the most impressive improvement is in the brain. Experiments have shown that jogging leads to new neurons being created in the brain. Neurons are cells in the brain, and an increase in their number has shown to lead to better learning and memory capabilities while tackling diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Huntington’s disease.

However, there are far more benefits for the brain than we would expect. Increased neuro-plasticity as a result of jogging means that the brain is more capable of adapting to changes, such as pregnancy. The brain also increases its cognitive ability and releases hormones that improve your mood and self-motivational abilities as well as many other psychological benefits.

6. Psychological Health

After introducing jogging to your regular routine, you will notice several improvements to your psychological health and energy levels. Jogging is often advised to those suffering from depression or addiction, although you do not need to be suffering from either of these two to notice the benefits.

Jogging causes a state of euphoria known as ‘runner’s high’ which comes after a period of moderate exercise. This feeling of euphoria is due to the release of endorphins. Jogging is also known to act as an anti-depressant, reduce stress, and increase energy levels, meaning that for those feeling low on energy and struggling with day to day activities, a gentle jog will increase your capability to deal with daily activities. This is essentially what fitness is all for.

7. Immune System

As with everything else, the immune system also increases in functionality. Your body becomes stronger and can resist infections, like the common cold. However, this is not the case for marathon runners who exert themselves to such an extent that their body is weakened.

This improvement is because of increased physical strength, stronger filtering devices in the trachea and increased production of white blood cells, as well as lower levels of stress, depression and fatigue. It is worth bearing in mind that putting your body under too much strain will weaken your immune system temporarily.

8. Bones

Jogging can strengthen the bones and may help prevent certain bone diseases from forming. Having healthy bones is important for a number of reasons. For example, red blood cells are produced by bone marrow. Jogging could also contribute to building stronger and more flexible joints.

9. Weight Loss

One of the major reasons that people start jogging is to lose weight. I mentioned earlier that cholesterol is burnt in veins and arteries, and it is true of fat in the body as well.

If you are jogging as part of a weight loss program it is important to be sensible and to take it slowly, run with good shoes and try to run on softer surfaces such as grass to lessen the pressure on your knees.

A good weight loss diet together with regular jogging can work wonders!

10. Anti-ageing

Everything mentioned above contributes to slowing the effects of age. After a relatively short period of jogging you will be in a better state both physically and mentally, and higher levels of energy and positivity help maintain a youthful outlook on life. More blood and oxygen gets to your skin, giving it more colour and firmness, thus slowing down any developing wrinkles.

11. Any Time, Any Place

Starting to jog only takes a little motivation and it can be done from anywhere at any time. Jogging in green areas is good for the sense of ‘runner’s high’ because you feel as though you are out in nature, something that is good for your psychological health.

However, if you live in a city and aren’t near a park, jogging down streets will still give you all the benefits listed above. Jogging can be done any time of the day at any time of year for the same benefits. It is sensible to wear warm clothes in the winter.

12. It is Free

Jogging incurs no extra cost other than buying a good pair of trainers. No other equipment is needed and no membership fee has to be paid to go for a run. Your health can be improved substantially, for free!

13. Improves Energy Levels

I mentioned earlier how increased energy levels are psychologically healthy, but this will also have huge benefits for all other areas of your life. Not only will you have more energy to be able to exercise longer, but your overall productivity will increase, be it at school or work.

14. Confidence

Jogging will drastically increase your confidence too. Many people look at their bodies with a very critical eye, and when you see the physical improvements, a greater self worthiness will be another reward. This is also due to the anti-depressive and stress reducing qualities of jogging.

15. Thought Organisation

Jogging has been shown to help people organise thoughts. When a stressful or complicated situation arises, a jog will help you feel as though you are physically moving through your thoughts and help you to reach a solution. This may be because you are spending time completely alone and with your body, that you feel you get closer to what is important to you.

16. Self-Sufficiency

Self-sufficiency is an important thing to learn in life. You have to know what you are capable of alone, and jogging not only helps you find that, but also helps you push your capabilities. This is because when jogging, it is completely up to you to meet targets and no one else can help you. If you are unfit, jogging will make you realise that and encourage you to push the limits of your capabilities.

17. Perseverance

Jogging teaches you that no gain can be achieved without perseverance. As with other areas of life, you will need to put work in to see any results. These results will be being able to run further, as well as the extensive health benefits listed above. When it is just you and the road, there is no choice but to just keep going, and this is a lesson that can be implemented in other areas of life.

18. Increase Attention to Health

Jogging reveals to you exactly what state of physical health your body is in. When we don’t exercise we do not see the damage that is caused by drinking, smoking and unhealthy foods, because we do not push ourselves beyond our comfort zones.

If you go for a jog after a long period of no exercise, the strain and pain in your heart and lungs will encourage you to stop smoking and drop other damaging habits and focus on starting a healthier lifestyle. This is good because although jogging is extremely healthy, it is not the only thing that can help your health.

19. Damage Reduction

When you exercise, the damage of living an unhealthy lifestyle can be reduced. Clearly this is not the best attitude to have because living in an unhealthy way is not recommended, but if you want to run to lessen the damage of an unhealthy meal or night, then you can! You should of course try to maintain a healthy lifestyle whenever possible.

20. Social Sport

Although jogging requires your own physical and mental strength, there are many groups that organise jogging sessions. This is a good way to meet active people and can be encouraging, as well as providing a less lonesome way of exercising regularly.

21. Improved Sleep

Your sleep will improve not only because you will be physically tired, but also because negative thoughts and stress that tend to keep us up at night are significantly lessened as a result of jogging. This will have further benefits in your life, and help maintain high energy levels.

22. Increases Life Span

All of the health improvements that come from jogging contribute to a longer life. All the physical and mental problems that jogging helps to overcome are serious problems that deteriorate your health, whether it be stress and depression or a weak heart.

Moreover, jogging will ensure that the extra years of your life are more likely to be free of diseases such as Alzheimer’s and it also counteracts the steady degradation of our bones, which happens to all of us as we age.

I hope you have enjoyed reading this article and it has given you a number of reasons to start incorporating jogging into your life, if you already don’t.

Youth Coping with an Epidemic Affecting Sports – USA

SPORTS OF THE TIMES

‘Everything Is Closed Down.’ The Lack of Youth Sports Is a Crisis.

Despite a glut of sports on TV, the lack of youth leagues and teams in the pandemic could cost us for years to come.

There is concern that communities like Watts are falling behind more middle-class and wealthy areas in keeping their children playing during the pandemic. Credit…Gabriella Angotti-Jones for The New York Times

By Kurt Streeter Published Oct. 12, 2020

Tyrone Riley is worried. He is a basketball coach and a father, and he is witnessing firsthand the devastating effects of the coronavirus pandemic on youth sports in America.

He describes it as a tragedy.

Riley is the coach of the boys’ varsity team at Jordan High School in Watts, one of the hardest parts of South Los Angeles. He graduated from Jordan, grew up in one of the housing projects nearby, and went on to succeed in college basketball and then in European pro leagues.

He knows to his core the power that sports can have in changing lives and bringing communities together.

He also knows the grim reality of what has unfolded since the coronavirus spread to the United States in March.

Far from the glamour of professional and college games that appear in abundance on our screens, sports are barely limping along at the community level where children learn to love games and families come together to sit in stands and form lasting bonds.

Since March, youth participation in sports has dropped off a cliff.

In communities like Watts, sports barely exist at all.

“Everything is closed down,” Riley told me this week. Recreation centers. Gymnasiums. Many outdoor basketball courts are surrounded by fences and locked gates.

Riley has two sons, ages 14 and 10. They’re budding basketball players. But all they can do right now is train when they can, where they can. Usually, that’s in the early morning at one of the outdoor courts, far from anyone else.

“I’m a coach, but the time my boys spend playing is down probably 80 percent,” he said. “I spend a lot of time wondering how we’re going to get out of this.”

Anthony Joshua to face Kubrat Pulev at 02 Arena December 12, 2020

By PA Sport Staff Oct 16, 2020, 12:24 PM

Anthony Joshua is set to fight for the first time in a year after it was officially announced he will defend his heavyweight world titles against Kubrat Pulev on December 12 at London’s O2 Arena.

Joshua – who has not fought since outpointing Andy Ruiz Jr to regain his titles on December 7 2019 – was scheduled to take on his Bulgarian mandatory challenger on June 20 but the bout was postponed because of the coronavirus pandemic.

It has now been confirmed he will take on Pulev in his first home bout in more than two years, with his IBF, WBA, WBO and IBO belts on the line.

It is currently unclear whether any fans will be permitted to attend the bout, with all pilot events for live sport currently on hold, but Joshua’s camp have made it clear they will make the case for a limited live crowd.

While the man himself will be focused on taking care of business inside the ring, he hopes for some of his supporters to be cheering him on.

“The O2 is the original lion’s den, I have a lot of history with the arena, but without the fans something huge is missing,” he said.

“I am really hoping that, safety permitting, we might be able to bring some boxing fans in, but we will have to see. December 12 is the date and once again the Heavyweight belts go up in the air and it is my sole focus to make sure that come December 13 they are in their rightful place in the UK.

“I respect every opponent and I respect Pulev. I wish him well during his preparation.”

The fighters – both of whom have only lost once in their professional careers, Joshua to Ruiz Jr last year and Pulev against Wladimir Klitschko in 2014 – were first set to meet in October 2017 at the Principality Stadium.

However, a shoulder injury Pulev sustained two weeks before the fight led to his withdrawal as Joshua took on and overcame late replacement Carlos Takam.

Having now fought his way back into contention, Pulev said: “For a small country of Bulgaria to stand up for the heavyweight titles is a great accomplishment.

“This fight is for my late father and all Bulgarians around the world! I’m coming to London to seize the heavyweight championship of the world.”

If Joshua claims his 24th win from 25 outings in the paid ranks, he will take a step closer towards an all-British blockbuster showdown against Tyson Fury in a fight to determine the undisputed heavyweight champion.

Fury, who holds the WBC title, appears to have ruled out the prospect of facing Deontay Wilder, with the American reportedly missing the deadline to secure a trilogy fight.

Tyson Fury is likely to be Joshua's net opponent if he beats Pulev

Fury has therefore set his sights on a homecoming fight in December – with the Royal Albert Hall mooted as a potential venue – before taking on Joshua.

The pair have an agreement “in principle” to face-off twice next year.

Joshua’s Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn admitted the fight would not be quite the same without the usual packed house, but promised a spectacle.

“After a challenging year for everyone, to end with the unified world heavyweight championship is very special,” he said.

“AJ’s resume is unrivalled, and this is the final hurdle until we challenge for the undisputed crown next year.

“Whilst it’s unusual to think of an AJ fight without tens of thousands of fans in attendance, we will be doing everything we can to lobby for the safe return of fans to this event, we have to move forward together.”

NBA Trade Options – Basketball USA

Evan Tiwari
ANALYST
Modified 20 Oct 2020, 01:23 IST

NBA Trade Options: LA Lakers will be looking to add a third star this offseason to complement Davis and LeBron James.
Victor Oladipo can be a very good addition to an already strong LA Lakers squad.

After winning a record-tying 17th NBA championship, the LA Lakers will now set their sights on the offseason as they will look to improve their roster. The LA Lakers have some decent NBA trade options in front of them, as they begin their hunt for a third star who can complement LeBron James and Anthony Davis.

NBA Trade Options: ESPN insiders suggest Victor Oladipo to LA Lakers move in the offseason

Despite having Anthony Davis and LeBron James, the LA Lakers still have a glaring weakness that strong opponents have the capability to expose – the lack of a reliable star at the guard position. The backcourt starters are Danny Green and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, who are streaky shooters and lack playmaking skills.

Acquiring a player who can offer this skill-set will be the priority for the LA Lakers this offseason. And according to ESPN insiders Brian Windhorst and Kevin Pelton, the historic franchise could be in for the Indiana Pacers’ Victor Oladipo. The insider duo discussed the possibility of an NBA trade on the Hoops Collective Podcast. On the prospect of LA Lakers landing Oladipo, Kevin Pelton stated the following:

“If Victor Oladipo is close to being what if he was before injury, I think you do that trade in a milisecond. Danny Green is 33, Kuzma is fine but nothing special, and you are trading a 1st round pick, not a lottery pick.”

NBA Trade Options: Why taking a chance on Victor Oladipo should be a no brainer for the LA Lakers

As suggested by the insiders, acquiring Victor Oladipo won’t be cheap, as the LA Lakers will have to part with promising star Kyle Kuzma, veteran Danny Green, and a first-round pick. The possibility of acquiring a third star as good as Victor Oladipo will be enticing for Rob Pelinka and the Lakers. As such, there’s a strong chance of them possibly going for this NBA trade.

Victor Oladipo will be a massive improvement in the LA Lakers’ backcourt, as he is a former Most Improved Player award winner and also made the All-NBA Third Team in the 2017-18 season. However, there are doubts about him rediscovering that form, considering a ruptured quad tendon in his right knee has kept him out of a considerable amount of action since 2019.

The Nigerian shooting guard has been linked with a move to multiple teams in the offseason, with Miami Heat being a potential destination for him. NBA trade rumors suggest that Victor Oladipo is looking to secure a move away from the Pacers, and this will be a golden opportunity for the LA Lakers to strike while the iron is hot.

The Fastest Cars in the World

It took over a year, but Bugatti’s 304-mph record has finally been broken. There’s a new top-speed champion as of October 19, 2020, and it’s made by a company few people have heard about. Does the name SSC ring a bell? How about Tuatara? Nope?

Now that it snagged the speed crown from Bugatti, odds are you’ll hear a lot more about this Washington-based firm and about the record-breaking machines it designs and builds.

While the Chiron could go faster, test pilot Andy Wallace said the Chiron was still accelerating, Bugatti has made it clear it’s done chasing speed records. Sweden-based Koenigsegg could try stealing the crown one final time.

It confirmed the Jesko Absolute is the fastest car it will ever build, though it hasn’t had the chance to test it on the track yet. Although 330 mph is theoretically possible, finding a road long enough to test it on is easier said than done.

A shiny wonder of Afro-European art-pop, Mr. Manager

Mr. Manager

Review by Timothy Monger [-]

A shiny wonder of Afro-European art-pop, Mr. Manager is the second release by the inspired duo of French composer/producer Hector Zazou and Congolese singer Bony Bikaye. Initially released in 1985 by Belgian imprint Crammed Discs, the label now offers up a deluxe reissue of this lost gem, expanding its original track list with nine more songs from the same sessions.

Following the cult success, Zazou Bikaye’s fascinating 1983 collaboration with analog synth duo CY1, Noir et Blanc, the two musicians assembled a similarly eclectic cast that included horn and woodwind players, percussionists, a guitarist, and backing vocalists to accompany Zazou’s electronic compositions and Bikaye’s increasingly wild vocal performances. A five-song version of Mr. Manager appeared in 1985, receiving due acclaim and garnering some international attention, though the sessions that bore this material lasted well into 1986, with most of the other tracks remaining unreleased until now.

An Afro-beat-funk hybrid that encompasses avant-garde pop, electronic programming, and inventive vocals, Mr. Manager remains a shockingly fresh and progressive listen 35 years later. In spite of its attention to detail, a sense of immediacy and spontaneity informs the whole endeavor from the joyous “Nostalgie” to the vivid call-and-response of “Nakangi,” the latter of which benefits from a fascinating cacophony of quirky drum machines, abstract digital noises, and a thrilling soprano sax part courtesy of daring Frenchman Philippe de la Croix Herpin.

Other songs are almost surreal in their balance of aching tenderness and eerie abstraction, like “Signorina”e and the enchanting “Soki Akei,” which features some of Bikaye’s most daring vocals. Likewise, his strangely affected delivery on “Viva la Musica” breathes and stutters in a way that sounds almost like a backward tape effect. Between Zazou’s offbeat arrangements and Bikaye’s fearless vocals, every track feels like an adventure with surprises around every corner.

Whether New York was taking notice of Zazou Bikaye or vice versa, it’s not hard to make a sonic parallel to some of Talking Heads’ and Arthur Russell’s mid-80s adventures, though Bikaye’s soukous/avant-pop influence makes this much more of a wildcard. There is much to unpack among Mr. Manager’s wealth of treasures and nearly all of it is exciting.

How to Avoid Dangers When Paddling a Kayak or Canoe

STEPS

Last Updated: October 8, 2020

It is just as important to know where not to paddle as to where you can as a beginner paddler. This article provides a rundown of situations to be aware of when out paddling a kayak or canoe.

Steps

1

Learn about obstacles and issues before you paddle out. It is important to get good, reliable information about the water bodies you are paddling on before you set out, especially as a beginner. Ask park authorities, local kayak/canoe stores, hire stores, local adventure outfits etc. for information. The internet can also prove a useful resource.

2

Keep an eye on the wind and current direction. Always paddle when you are in safe currents and winds. Currents that can carry you away faster than you can paddle must be avoided, as well as winds that have the same effect. If you are not sure, find someone seasoned to show you how to read the signs of currents and winds.

3

Avoid obstacles. Paddling can quickly become a nightmare if you encounter obstacles, such as slippery rocks, deep mud, boulders, trees growing near or in the water etc. Also watch for tree roots in some locations.

Image titled Avoid Dangers when Paddling a Kayak or Canoe Step 4

4

Be extra careful of a combination of current and obstacles. Getting stuck against the upstream side of something like a tree, larger craft, rock etc. is a common cause of accidents when the current gets out of your control.

 5

Keep away from weirs, dams, and other human created water control creations. Weirs and dams can have their own sources of challenges such as eddies, steep drops, unusual currents created by deliberate blockages etc. Beginner paddlers should simply steer clear. Dams can be barred from water recreation; find out in advance.

Watch out for low bridges. If you get jammed under a low level bridge in a swift running current, you can strike a serious problem if the boat tips.

10 of the Greatest Men’s Soccer Players of All Time

Here’s a look at 10 players who left an indelible mark on the beautiful game.
UPDATED:
ORIGINAL:

Pelé

Any list of soccer’s all-time greats begins and ends with Pelé, whose supernatural gifts raised the bar for what was possible on the pitch. Just 17 when he burst on the scene with Brazil’s first World Cup victory in 1958, he missed much of the ’62 title defense to injury, but led the charge with a Golden Ball-winning performance as the Seleção cruised to their third victory in four tries in 1970. Meanwhile, he dazzled crowds at home and when his Santos club toured the world, earning the nickname “O Rei” (The King) for his sublime efforts. Pelé is credited with 1,283 career goals, and while many of them came in semi-formal competition, the mind-boggling total emphasizes his celestial ranking in the game’s history.

Diego Maradona

While Pelé is generally considered the game’s most famous player, there are those who swear by their left foot that Diego Maradona was the superior talent. The Napoli faithful in Italy likely agree, after the diminutive playmaker led the club to their first two league titles and a UEFA Cup win by 1990. Then there are his Argentinean countrymen, who were left grasping for words after their savior produced the “hand of God” score and the “goal of the century” en route to a World Cup triumph in 1986. The fires that fueled Maradona also led to the off-the-field escapades that eroded his effectiveness, but there was no denying the magnificence of his game at his peak.

Michel Platini

Michel Platini Photo

While in Italy, Maradona got an up-close look at another legend, France’s Michel Platini. A do-it-all midfielder, “Platoche” possessed exquisite touch and a scorer’s mentality, winning three consecutive Ballon d’Ors while leading Saint-Etienne and Juventus to league titles and a host of other trophies. While he never tasted the thrill of a World Cup title, Platini’s performance for France in Euro 1984, in which he delivered nine goals in five matches, marked arguably the greatest individual run for a player in an international tournament. Sadly, his once-impeccable reputation was tarnished after he became UEFA president, as an investigation into illicit payments led to a lengthy ban from the sport in 2015.

Marco van Basten

Few players packed as many accomplishments into a brief career as Marco van Basten. The graceful striker claimed four consecutive scoring titles and a slew of trophies with Ajax Amsterdam, before adding to his haul with three league titles, two European Cups and three Ballon d’Ors with AC Milan. Van Basten also authored one of the sport’s most famous goals, his header from a seemingly impossible angle sparking the Netherlands to victory over the Soviet Union in Euro 1988. Unfortunately, injuries all but ended his playing days by age 28, robbing this breathtaking talent and his fans of many more memorable moments.

Jürgen Klinsmann

Picking up the mantle from predecessors like Franz Beckenbauer and Gerd Müller, Jürgen Klinsmann contributed heartily to Germany’s storied soccer history. Twice named his country’s player of the year, the striker helped West Germany claim the 1990 World Cup and captained a unified German side to victory at Euro 1996. Klinsmann starred on the club level as well, winning a pair of UEFA Cups and a league title during his time with Inter Milan and Bayern Munich. He then moved on to a successful coaching career, guiding Germany to a third-place finish at the 2006 World Cup and pushing an upstart American World Cup team out of the “group of death” stage in 2014.
