Youth Coping with an Epidemic Affecting Sports – USA

SPORTS OF THE TIMES

‘Everything Is Closed Down.’ The Lack of Youth Sports Is a Crisis.

Despite a glut of sports on TV, the lack of youth leagues and teams in the pandemic could cost us for years to come.

Tyrone Riley is worried. He is a basketball coach and a father, and he is witnessing firsthand the devastating effects of the coronavirus pandemic on youth sports in America.

He describes it as a tragedy.

Riley is the coach of the boys’ varsity team at Jordan High School in Watts, one of the hardest parts of South Los Angeles. He graduated from Jordan, grew up in one of the housing projects nearby, and went on to succeed in college basketball and then in European pro leagues.

He knows to his core the power that sports can have in changing lives and bringing communities together.

He also knows the grim reality of what has unfolded since the coronavirus spread to the United States in March.

Far from the glamour of professional and college games that appear in abundance on our screens, sports are barely limping along at the community level where children learn to love games and families come together to sit in stands and form lasting bonds.

Since March, youth participation in sports has dropped off a cliff.

In communities like Watts, sports barely exist at all.

“Everything is closed down,” Riley told me this week. Recreation centers. Gymnasiums. Many outdoor basketball courts are surrounded by fences and locked gates.

Riley has two sons, ages 14 and 10. They’re budding basketball players. But all they can do right now is train when they can, where they can. Usually, that’s in the early morning at one of the outdoor courts, far from anyone else.

“I’m a coach, but the time my boys spend playing is down probably 80 percent,” he said. “I spend a lot of time wondering how we’re going to get out of this.”

NBA Trade Options – Basketball USA

NBA Trade Options: LA Lakers will be looking to add a third star this offseason to complement Davis and LeBron James.
Victor Oladipo can be a very good addition to an already strong LA Lakers squad.

After winning a record-tying 17th NBA championship, the LA Lakers will now set their sights on the offseason as they will look to improve their roster. The LA Lakers have some decent NBA trade options in front of them, as they begin their hunt for a third star who can complement LeBron James and Anthony Davis.

NBA Trade Options: ESPN insiders suggest Victor Oladipo to LA Lakers move in the offseason

Despite having Anthony Davis and LeBron James, the LA Lakers still have a glaring weakness that strong opponents have the capability to expose – the lack of a reliable star at the guard position. The backcourt starters are Danny Green and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, who are streaky shooters and lack playmaking skills.

Acquiring a player who can offer this skill-set will be the priority for the LA Lakers this offseason. And according to ESPN insiders Brian Windhorst and Kevin Pelton, the historic franchise could be in for the Indiana Pacers’ Victor Oladipo. The insider duo discussed the possibility of an NBA trade on the Hoops Collective Podcast. On the prospect of LA Lakers landing Oladipo, Kevin Pelton stated the following:

“If Victor Oladipo is close to being what if he was before injury, I think you do that trade in a milisecond. Danny Green is 33, Kuzma is fine but nothing special, and you are trading a 1st round pick, not a lottery pick.”

NBA Trade Options: Why taking a chance on Victor Oladipo should be a no brainer for the LA Lakers

As suggested by the insiders, acquiring Victor Oladipo won’t be cheap, as the LA Lakers will have to part with promising star Kyle Kuzma, veteran Danny Green, and a first-round pick. The possibility of acquiring a third star as good as Victor Oladipo will be enticing for Rob Pelinka and the Lakers. As such, there’s a strong chance of them possibly going for this NBA trade.

Victor Oladipo will be a massive improvement in the LA Lakers’ backcourt, as he is a former Most Improved Player award winner and also made the All-NBA Third Team in the 2017-18 season. However, there are doubts about him rediscovering that form, considering a ruptured quad tendon in his right knee has kept him out of a considerable amount of action since 2019.

The Nigerian shooting guard has been linked with a move to multiple teams in the offseason, with Miami Heat being a potential destination for him. NBA trade rumors suggest that Victor Oladipo is looking to secure a move away from the Pacers, and this will be a golden opportunity for the LA Lakers to strike while the iron is hot.

The Fastest Cars in the World

It took over a year, but Bugatti’s 304-mph record has finally been broken. There’s a new top-speed champion as of October 19, 2020, and it’s made by a company few people have heard about. Does the name SSC ring a bell? How about Tuatara? Nope?

Now that it snagged the speed crown from Bugatti, odds are you’ll hear a lot more about this Washington-based firm and about the record-breaking machines it designs and builds.

While the Chiron could go faster, test pilot Andy Wallace said the Chiron was still accelerating, Bugatti has made it clear it’s done chasing speed records. Sweden-based Koenigsegg could try stealing the crown one final time.

It confirmed the Jesko Absolute is the fastest car it will ever build, though it hasn’t had the chance to test it on the track yet. Although 330 mph is theoretically possible, finding a road long enough to test it on is easier said than done.

How to Avoid Dangers When Paddling a Kayak or Canoe

STEPS

Last Updated: October 8, 2020

It is just as important to know where not to paddle as to where you can as a beginner paddler. This article provides a rundown of situations to be aware of when out paddling a kayak or canoe.

Steps

1

Learn about obstacles and issues before you paddle out. It is important to get good, reliable information about the water bodies you are paddling on before you set out, especially as a beginner. Ask park authorities, local kayak/canoe stores, hire stores, local adventure outfits etc. for information. The internet can also prove a useful resource.

2

Keep an eye on the wind and current direction. Always paddle when you are in safe currents and winds. Currents that can carry you away faster than you can paddle must be avoided, as well as winds that have the same effect. If you are not sure, find someone seasoned to show you how to read the signs of currents and winds.

3

Avoid obstacles. Paddling can quickly become a nightmare if you encounter obstacles, such as slippery rocks, deep mud, boulders, trees growing near or in the water etc. Also watch for tree roots in some locations.

4

Be extra careful of a combination of current and obstacles. Getting stuck against the upstream side of something like a tree, larger craft, rock etc. is a common cause of accidents when the current gets out of your control.

 5

Keep away from weirs, dams, and other human created water control creations. Weirs and dams can have their own sources of challenges such as eddies, steep drops, unusual currents created by deliberate blockages etc. Beginner paddlers should simply steer clear. Dams can be barred from water recreation; find out in advance.

Watch out for low bridges. If you get jammed under a low level bridge in a swift running current, you can strike a serious problem if the boat tips.

10 of the Greatest Men’s Soccer Players of All Time

Here’s a look at 10 players who left an indelible mark on the beautiful game.
UPDATED:
ORIGINAL:

Pelé

Any list of soccer’s all-time greats begins and ends with Pelé, whose supernatural gifts raised the bar for what was possible on the pitch. Just 17 when he burst on the scene with Brazil’s first World Cup victory in 1958, he missed much of the ’62 title defense to injury, but led the charge with a Golden Ball-winning performance as the Seleção cruised to their third victory in four tries in 1970. Meanwhile, he dazzled crowds at home and when his Santos club toured the world, earning the nickname “O Rei” (The King) for his sublime efforts. Pelé is credited with 1,283 career goals, and while many of them came in semi-formal competition, the mind-boggling total emphasizes his celestial ranking in the game’s history.

Diego Maradona

While Pelé is generally considered the game’s most famous player, there are those who swear by their left foot that Diego Maradona was the superior talent. The Napoli faithful in Italy likely agree, after the diminutive playmaker led the club to their first two league titles and a UEFA Cup win by 1990. Then there are his Argentinean countrymen, who were left grasping for words after their savior produced the “hand of God” score and the “goal of the century” en route to a World Cup triumph in 1986. The fires that fueled Maradona also led to the off-the-field escapades that eroded his effectiveness, but there was no denying the magnificence of his game at his peak.

Michel Platini

While in Italy, Maradona got an up-close look at another legend, France’s Michel Platini. A do-it-all midfielder, “Platoche” possessed exquisite touch and a scorer’s mentality, winning three consecutive Ballon d’Ors while leading Saint-Etienne and Juventus to league titles and a host of other trophies. While he never tasted the thrill of a World Cup title, Platini’s performance for France in Euro 1984, in which he delivered nine goals in five matches, marked arguably the greatest individual run for a player in an international tournament. Sadly, his once-impeccable reputation was tarnished after he became UEFA president, as an investigation into illicit payments led to a lengthy ban from the sport in 2015.

Marco van Basten

Few players packed as many accomplishments into a brief career as Marco van Basten. The graceful striker claimed four consecutive scoring titles and a slew of trophies with Ajax Amsterdam, before adding to his haul with three league titles, two European Cups and three Ballon d’Ors with AC Milan. Van Basten also authored one of the sport’s most famous goals, his header from a seemingly impossible angle sparking the Netherlands to victory over the Soviet Union in Euro 1988. Unfortunately, injuries all but ended his playing days by age 28, robbing this breathtaking talent and his fans of many more memorable moments.

Jürgen Klinsmann

Picking up the mantle from predecessors like Franz Beckenbauer and Gerd Müller, Jürgen Klinsmann contributed heartily to Germany’s storied soccer history. Twice named his country’s player of the year, the striker helped West Germany claim the 1990 World Cup and captained a unified German side to victory at Euro 1996. Klinsmann starred on the club level as well, winning a pair of UEFA Cups and a league title during his time with Inter Milan and Bayern Munich. He then moved on to a successful coaching career, guiding Germany to a third-place finish at the 2006 World Cup and pushing an upstart American World Cup team out of the “group of death” stage in 2014.

Tourism In Dubai During Covid-19

GLOBAL GATEWAY

What it’s like to visit Dubai as a tourist during Covid-19

David Dunn, CNN • Updated 25th September 2020

Open to visitors: After enduring a lockdown, Dubai opened to visitors again in July. But what can tourists expect when they get there?

Dubai (CNN) — There aren’t many countries currently welcoming almost all global tourists, but as its cooler months arrive and it moves into what would normally be peak season, Dubai is one of them.

The emirate’s sandy beaches, luxurious resorts and extensive theme parks are an inviting travel prospect, particularly for Northern Hemisphere travelers who, having been stuck at home during their summer, are now staring into the tunnel of a bleak winter of Covid-19.

But what can visitors to the UAE expect when they get there? Will they get a relaxing break from stresses at home, or is life in Dubai severely restricted?

The UAE has suffered its own Covid-19 surges, peaking in May and again in mid-September, but has a relatively low incidence rate compared to most urban centers.

It initiated a swift lockdown early on and, after adopting virus prevention measures, Dubai’s resorts have re-opened as swiftly — and safely — as guidelines and evolving regulations allowed.

And this means visitors must also embrace safety checks and protocols.

Having had to wear a mask on board their airplane, arrivals will need to do the same in every public place in Dubai or face a 3,000 dirham ($817) fine.

This includes taxis, currently allowing just two passengers unless it’s a minivan hailed via airport ground staff or the Careem app, and on Dubai Metro; sterilized and running as usual but with distancing mandatory.

A tourist gets her papers checked upon arrival at Terminal 3 at Dubai airport.

As residents we’ve experienced the city’s precautionary measures first-hand. And while those masks can prove irritating in the UAE heat, it’s good to know you’re in a country with a relatively low infection rate, in part, because of them.

The mask rule extends to Dubai’s theme parks, such as IMG Worlds of Adventure, where rules apply on two-meter social distancing and keeping every other seat empty, except when occupied by family members.

Visitors should get used to the smell of sanitizer. Dispensers are everywhere and everyone is expected to use them.

That goes for resorts where guests will find a revised experience, but one still wrapped in a warm welcome, even if the smiles are obscured by… you guessed it.

Thanks largely to early, comparatively strict, movement directives, sterilizing procedures and group gathering limits implemented by UAE authorities, Dubai is back to something approaching normality.

It feels safe, if sometimes surreal, but it doesn’t take long to absorb this “new normal” into vacation routines; that’s including buying masks, which are inexpensive and available in every pharmacy.

Hotels follow — and in some cases go beyond — mandated procedures that can appear odd or excessive at first, depending on what guests are used to.

Many resorts reawakened with attractive staycation and pool day deals to entice domestic guests. With many international travelers now able to make the trip, they too can expect temperature gun or thermal body scanner checks on arrival at hotels, restaurants, malls and even gyms, carried out by masked staff usually brandishing sanitizer in rubber-gloved hands.

Poolside, guests can expect plastic-sealed towels while lifeguards police social distancing and deter overcrowding and the mingling of strangers.

Less visibly, but equally reassuring, guest rooms are subject to additional cleansing, with non-vital paper items removed.

Dining too has undergone an overhaul. Many restaurants have ditched physical menus for QR codes that access online versions — which is alright so long as customers have mobile data or there’s decent Wi-Fi.

How to Talk to Teenagers About Vaping

E-cigarette usage is on the rise among teenagers. According to the US Surgeon General, e-cigarette usage increased 78 percent among high school students from 2017 to 2018, with more than 3.6 million US youth now using e-cigarettes (or vaping).

If you’re a parent and feeling concerned about this trend and looking for some advice on how to talk to teenagers about it, there are a few ways to approach the topic.

How to Talk to Teenagers About Vaping and the Ingredients in E-Cigarettes

Sixty-six percent of teens participating in a poll conducted by the National Institute on Drug Abuse said they believed their e-cigarettes “just contained flavoring,” while 13 percent admitted to not knowing what they were smoking at all. Most e-cigarettes contain nicotine, which is highly addictive, and can possibly rewire young teenage brains to become hooked on other substances. What’s more, researchers are starting to discover that the chemicals in e-liquids, and the chemicals produced during the vaping process may be toxic.

When you talk to your teenager about vaping, it’s extremely important to educate them on the ingredients e-cigarettes contain. Advertising and false information may have them believing vaping is much safer than it actually is.

How To Explain the Effects and Dangers of Nicotine

While some research suggests that e-cigarettes are less dangerous than regular cigarettes, it’s important for teens to realize that nicotine — in any form — is incredibly addictive. If the e-cigarette that they’re smoking contains nicotine, they’re affecting their brain’s reward system, affecting the development of brain circuits that control attention and learning, and may be opening the door to mood disorders and issues with impulse control.

It can sometimes be hard to convince teens to think about long term consequences, but the more they understand that nicotine has lasting effects, the more possible it becomes that they’ll think twice when presented with a change to vape.

How to Help Teenagers Avoid Peer Pressure

A 2010 review that investigated the impact of peer pressure and teen substance abuse found that while teens who had friends who smoked were more likely to smoke themselves, parenting remained an “important influence.” It’s not always easy to control who your son or daughter hangs out with, but remaining a strong, understanding force in their lives may help them make better decisions when you’re not around. And remember, if you smoke, you increase the likelihood that your kids will do the same.

However you decide to bring up the topic of vaping and e-cigarettes, it’s vital to start the conversation before advertisers, or your child’s friends, beat you to it. Whether they say it out loud or not, chances are, your kids will be thankful you did.
